For the bruised Bears, the Chiefs are a welcome sight, though they never would admit it.
The Chiefs haven’t tasted a victory this season, even counting exhibitions. They clearly are a team that isn’t hitting on many cylinders. Running back Larry Johnson didn’t report until Aug. 21 because of a contract situation, and he hasn’t found his groove. Quarterback Damon Huard won the starting job by default after second-year man Brodie Croyle failed to step up. Jared Allen, the team’s best pass rusher, will miss the Bears game because he is serving a suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
Whereas there was no shame in the Bears losing to the Chargers, there was shame in the Chiefs losing to the Texans. And the Chiefs have the disadvantage of playing two on the road to open the season.
Key stat: Since 1990, the Chiefs are 18-14 on the road in September, which is tied for the best record in the NFL.
Key matchup: Larry Johnson versus the Bears defense. The Bears typically have more trouble against big, physical backs like Johnson. But the Chiefs probably will give Johnson less than a full load because they still don’t think he’s in the best football shape.
Early pick: Bears 20-10.
