Cyclist wearing iPod hit by train

A bicyclist listening to his iPod was unaware of an oncoming train before it struck and killed him at a Kane County railroad crossing Sunday evening, police said. The man, identified as Gerardo Turrubiartes, 42, of St. Charles was going north on Engel Road in unincorporated Kane County near Burlington and attempting to ride across the crossing when he was hit by a westbound train.

Divers rescue man from lake

A 32-year-old man was hospitalized Monday after Chicago police divers pulled him from Lake Michigan off North Avenue Beach on Sunday night. Police received a 911 call from a child reporting that his or her father had gone under after being pulled out by waves shortly after 6 p.m., an official said. Divers found the man about 200 feet from shore in water about 8 feet deep. He was hospitalized and listed in critical condition.

Sheriff’s office official killed

A high-ranking official with the Cook County sheriff’s office was killed Sunday in a crash on Chicago’s South Side. Sheriff’s Supt. Minerva Santiago was traveling east on 31st Street when her car was struck by a southbound Chevrolet Blazer, which apparently ran a red light at Western Avenue, authorities said Monday. Santiago was superintendent of women’s justice services at the County Jail. She had two children and four grandchildren.
