Senate Democrats will block former solicitor general Ted Olson, mentioned as a possible successor to Alberto Gonzales as attorney general, if President Bush nominates him, Majority Leader Harry Reid said.

“Ted Olson will not be confirmed,” Reid (D-Nev.) said.

The Wednesday comment gave weight to Republican warnings. “It would be unfortunate to nominate someone who can’t be confirmed,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), a member of the Judiciary Committee.
