– Daryle Ward replaced 1B Derrek Lee in the starting lineup. Lee was a late scratch because of a sore right knee.
– Jeff Samardzija’s first full season in the Cubs system provided mixed results, but the Cubs are encouraged with his progress and the former Notre Dame receiver is still on track to make it to the major leagues sometime in 2008. “He pitched really well,” said Tennessee manager Pat Listach, who joined the Cubs on Thursday to help out for the stretch run. “He had seven starts, and he very easily could have been 7-0. He started out 3-0 and ended up 3-3, but he lost his last three starts by one run.”
