Summary: On the opening kickoff, Maine South LB Nick Catino picked up a fumble and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown and the rout was on. WR Danny Benson’s 53-yard punt return made it 14-0, and the Hawks went on to score four more times in the opening quarter for a 42-0 lead.
Top performers: Maine South — Benson, 4 catches, 100 yards, 2 TDs (35, 55); QB Charlie Goro, 6-for-9, 127 yards, 2 TDs. Maine East — DE Avery Roche, 75-yard interception return for TD.
Extra point: “On my 53-yard punt return, I actually was supposed to call for a fair catch, but the ball rolled into me so I picked it up and ran,” Benson said. “This was our hardest week of practice all year, after we lost last week.”
Glenbrook North 15, Waukegan 13
Records: Glenbrook North 3-1, Waukegan 3-1.
Summary: A struggling Glenbrook North passing game forced RB Chris Collins to shoulder the load for the Spartans, and he delivered. Collins finished with 141 yards on 33 carries and a touchdown (1 yard). Waukegan had allowed only 7 points in its first three games combined, including two shutouts.
Top performers: Glenbrook North — Collins; LB Andrew Hoppe, 5 tackles, 2 INTs. Waukegan — WR/DB Rashaan Melvin, 5 receptions, 66 yards, 2 INTs, fumble recovery.
Extra point: “That defense was swarming and attacking,” Collins said. “I haven’t been hit that hard since I can remember.”
Lake Forest 34, Mundelein 7
Records: Lake Forest 4-0, 2-0 North Suburban Lake; Mundelein 2-2, 0-1.
Summary: The Scouts cruised in their inaugural game at Varsity Field behind a pair of quarterbacks — senior James Borrasso tossed four touchdowns while sophomore Tommy Rees ran for another. The two combined to complete 9 of 12 passes for 199 yards. Following a blocked punt in the final minute of the first quarter, Lake Forest took the lead for good on the next play when Borrasso connected with WR John James Parker for a 32-yard TD.
Top performers: Lake Forest — Borrasso, 5-for-7 for 139, 4 TDs (27, 28, 32, 35); TE Andrew Carpenter, 2 TD catches (27, 28). DE Addison Sadewater, 2 sacks (of team’s 4). Mundelein — RB Jamal Ross, 140 all-purpose yards.
Extra point: “Our offense kept moving with Tommy [Rees] in the game,” Borrasso said of the recently elevated QB. “We’re kind of the same guy. We both like dropping back.”
Morgan Park 42, Vocational 0
Records: Morgan Park 3-1, Vocational 1-3.
Summary: Sophomore WR Antwain Windman took a fake punt 37 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to highlight a 28-point first half from Morgan Park. The Mustangs scored 14 of their 42 points off of three Vocational turnovers.
Top performers: Morgan Park — QB Jelani Eady, 9-for-21, 160 yards, 2 TDs; RB Preston Griffin, 6 carries, 64 yards, TD; WR Daron Brown, 4 catches, 100 yards, 2 TDs. Vocational — QB Sammeyale Williams, 3 carries, 40 yards.
Extra point: “Our game plan was to contain Morgan Park’s best players, and the contributing factor to our loss was not playing as a team,” Vocational RB Alan Moody said.
