Presenters Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert earned the biggest laughs of the Emmys telecast.
Stewart chastised Colbert, who came on stage using a gas-powered leaf blower. “These are the green Emmys,” Stewart said.
Colbert took offense at Stewart’s suggestion that he didn’t care about global warming.
“This baby runs on alternative fuel — Al gore’s tears,” he said. “Yes, turns out they are highly flammable.” He then turned the blame on Stewart for flying to the show on a “private jet sandwich” (a triple-decker airplane appeared on the monitors).
“Perhaps even the very act of gathering tonight for an awards show, no matter how green, is wasteful,” Stewart said. “Perhaps we shouldn’t even have awards shows.”
Colbert feigned shock. “What? Jon! If entertainers stopped publicly congratulating each other, then the Earth wins,” he said.
They announced that Ricky Gervais of “Extras” had won the award for best actor in a comedy series.
“Ricky Gervais could not be here tonight. Instead we’re going to give this to our friend, Steve Carell,” Stewart said. Carell, a nominee for “The Office,” bounded on stage for a joyous reunion with his two former “Daily Show” cohorts, yelling, hugging and bumping chests with them as the crowd went wild.
