– Jeff Bennett allowed only one run in 5 2/3 innings to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 3-1 victory over Milwaukee on Thursday night. The Brewers, trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 1982, slipped to 1 1/2 games behind the division-leading Cubs, who were idle.

– Cubs catcher Geovany Soto has gone from overlooked to perhaps being the starter in the final week of the National League Central race. Including Wednesday night’s game, in which he hit a homer, Soto is 10-for-19 with three doubles in five starts.

– Major League Baseball denied the Reds’ protest of their 7-6 loss Monday night to the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

– The Cubs’ record against left-handed starting pitchers is 16-22. They’ll face three in a row against the Pirates.
