Weller won’t run again
Rep. Jerry Weller (R-Ill.), who has faced ethics questions regarding Nicaraguan investments, officially announced Friday that he will not seek another term. Weller, 50, is in his seventh term in Congress, representing Illinois’ 11th District. He said he wants to spend more time with his wife, Zury Rios de Weller, and their baby girl.
Family Secrets deliberations to resume
Jurors in the Family Secrets mob conspiracy trial ended a fourth day of deliberations Friday on the murders in the case without reaching a verdict. The anonymous panel left for the day at 3:45 p.m., giving the court a note indicating they would return at 9 a.m. Monday to continue deliberating. The jury, which is considering 18 gangland slayings, began deliberating Sept. 12 but took a week off and restarted its discussions Thursday.
Teacher facing abuse charges
A special education teacher at Robert Frost Junior High School in Schaumburg was charged early Friday with aggravated battery and unlawful restraint after police said he physically abused at least three children on four separate occasions. Police said Patrick McCarthy, 30, pushed a pupil into a wall, pushed one into a filing cabinet, forced one pupil onto a piece of gym equipment, and tied a pupil to a chair.
