City with a heart
During a recent visit to your city, I was crossing a busy intersection on the day of the big storm when the handles on a Macy’s bag broke and two boxes of shoes and several smaller items spilled onto the road. A kind gentleman ran to my rescue and helped me retrieve everything, and in my anxiety I don’t think I even thanked him.
Two days later, I was walking across the Adams Street bridge and tripped. I landed on my face and did great damage. A group of young people gathered and were so kind and helpful. They stayed with me until I was able to get into a cab.
I ended up at Northwestern Memorial hospital, where I was treated with wonderful care and much kindness.
They say that big cities don’t have a heart, but I say that yours does.

Getting a lift
Thanks for the special issue on individual efforts to make the world a better place (“The power of one,” Aug. 19). The Magazine as a whole was itself one of those small, good things that lift the heart.

Bowled over
Reading about the Twin Anchors restaurant (“Pearl of Old Town,” Sidewalks, Aug. 26) brought back memories of my first visit there 40 years ago on a Sunday afternoon date. I wondered, “Where has he taken me to–a tavern?”
Being somewhat spunky, I did something that a girl normally wouldn’t do back then–I beat him at the bowling game three times. Ah, sweet memories.
