Neuqua Valley’s Chris Derrick surged past Mike Fout of LaPorte (Ind.) and shattered the course record by more than 30 seconds to win the 26th annual Culver Academies Invitational in Culver, Ind. Derrick, who took third place in Class AA last year, finished the 3.1-mile course in 14:47.9. Behind Derrick and teammate Danny Pawola (third), the Wildcats won the team title. Elaine Kuckertz’s third-place finish in the girls race helped Hinsdale Central take third place overall.
*Palatine edged defending Class AA champion York 77-79 to win the 29-team Palatine Invitational. York’s Tom Achtien finished first with a time of 14:02.8. Matt Smoody edged York’s Steve Sulkin for third to pace the Pirates. Lyons Township, led by Jane Simpson’s 10th-place finish, won the girls race. No Lions runner finished lower than 42nd. Palatine finished second. Warren’s Heather Olsen (17:16) took individual honors.
Girls golf
Homewood-Flossmoor freshman Ashley Armstrong outdueled defending Class AA champion Alexandra Lederhausen of Hinsdale Central to take home medalist honors at the Naperville North Rosie Invitational at Naperbrook Golf Course. Armstrong finished with a 71, two shots better than Lederhausen. Junior Samantha Postillion’s sixth-place finish helped Hinsdale Central edge Homewood-Flossmoor 326-327 for the team title.
Boys golf
Sean Smith, John Ida and Kevin Wiatr posted 73s to pace Lemont to the team title at the Hinsdale Invitational. Hinsdale Central’s Jordan Gold and Batavia’s Shawn Steurer shared medalist honors with 72s.
