Art seen: The Hyde Park Arts Center comes alive at night when the curious, creative and crafty gather for Cocktail & Clay on second Fridays each month. One recent night, cocktails got the creative juices flowing for newcomers Eurydice Crockett and Michelle Perry, who were sipping while sculpting in the studio. “The bartender should be in here,” said Crockett. “That will give me some encouragement.” Proceeds from the events raise funds for the center’s arts programs.

Clay critic: “We have a lot of flatness over here,” observed instructor Theaster Gates Jr. He has to be joking. Did he not see the outfits some of the women were wearing? Oops, he was describing the developing landscapes, the night’s theme.

NO BETTER BEACH

Muhammad Ali couldn’t make it, but Bears legend Gale Sayers, ball co-chair Lou Anne Kellman and the Seneca hotel’s Michael Foster were there for the Better Boys Foundation’s first Simply Elegant Beach Ball. To reach the beach, guests piled into golf carts for the ride to the Oak Street Beachstro-where they were treated to a sunset buffet.
