Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has launched a review of the Boston Fire Department amid mounting evidence of substance abuse within its ranks, including a revelation that 159 firefighters — a number representing about 10 percent of the current force — were referred to treatment programs in the last three years.
On Thursday, autopsies on two Boston firefighters who were killed while battling a restaurant blaze in August revealed that one had a blood alcohol content more than three times the legal limit and the other had cocaine in his system, news media outlets reported.
