This season, sequins are seeing the light of day.
It’s a fun, look-at-me idea that can perk up the serious gray, camel and black monotones of fall ’07 fashion. But it’s also a look that can easily go overboard into Vegas showgirl territory.
The key, like so much in life, is in compromise: Pair those sequin tops and dresses with softer, more relaxed textures that dress them down for day. Sequins and cashmere. Sequins and black opaque tights. Sequins and jeans. What’s not to love?
Here are three looks we’re falling for.
The sequin striped T
The basic preppy bold-striped T gets rock-star treatment with a gray and bronze top by Alice + Olivia that looks great with jeans or a tweed pant.
The sequin dress
Match this dress with strappy sandals and big bold earrings, and you’re ready for the cocktail hour. But scale the look back for day by covering it with a voluminous chocolate wrap sweater woven with shimmery strands of metallic yarn. We’ve got it with low-heeled beige patent boots to suit the mod look that’s also one of fall’s key trends. If you want to play it even safer, go with textured opaque black tights and knee-high suede boots.
The sequin sneaker
This shoe is a little silly, true, but it combines two of our favorite things: the comfort of classic but laceless Converse All-Stars and the girly-girl shine of silver. This looks like something Barbie would have in the closet of her Dream House. Keep it super-casual with jeans and a sweater or kick it up a notch with a skirt or dress.
