See the marathon
About 1.5 million people are expected on Sunday to watch the 40,000 runners in the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. 8 a.m. Sunday; free for spectators, registration closed for runners. Begins at Grant Park, 500 S. Columbus Drive; 312-904-9800. Here are five great spectator spots along the 26.2-mile route.
1. MILE 12.75
Energizer “Keep Going” Zones (Adams and Franklin Streets, other locations): Spectators joining the fray at these marks are provided with Energizer Bunny ears (while supplies last) to invigorate the heads of the pack.
2. MILE 13
New Balance Cheer Zones (Near Old St. Patrick’s Church. Also at the finish line): Gratis cheering items will be handed out in the West Loop, while available.
3. MILE 14.4
Occidental Brothers Dance Band Int’l (Adams Street and Ashland Avenue): Featuring classic Central and West African dance music.
4. MILE 21.4
Chinatown (Cermak Road and Wentworth Avenue): One of the more popular spots is destined to remain so, thanks to the festive decor and plenty of places to shop and eat.
5. MILE 23.2
The International Mile (35th Street, between State Street and Michigan Avenue): Supportive messages in native languages, colorful flags and costumed dancers celebrate global diversity at this station.
