Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We moved into our new home just before the U.S. entered World War II. Due to a shortage of workmen because they were fighting the war, it was almost impossible to get any workman if anything failed with an appliance.

Our refrigerator would stop running occasionally. My mother figured out if she took her yard stick and hit a certain spot on the back, it would work again.

One day when I was playing with some of my girlfriends in the living room, my mother came flying downstairs, yardstick in hand, ran by us and proceeded to beat up the refrigerator.

Thinking nothing of it, I was amazed that my friends were so surprised. I thought every mother beat up her refrigerator.
