*Israeli police detained and released eight-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater early Saturday after a scuffle with photographers who were trying to take pictures of him with Israeli supermodel Bar Rafaeli as they left a hotel outside Tel Aviv, a police spokesman said.

*Johnny Marr, the co-founder and guitarist of 1980s icons The Smiths, is turning to academia as a visiting professor of music. Marr, whose distinctive guitar style propelled hits by The Smiths including “How Soon Is Now,” “Panic” and “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,” has been appointed to teach undergraduates at Salford University in Manchester, England.

*Eva Longoria says she has no plans to have children. *Members of Hollywood’s film and television writers union have voted to authorize a strike any time after their contract expires at the end of the month. More than 5,000 members of the Writers Guild of America cast ballots, with 90 percent voting in favor of authorizing the strike.
