*Johnny Marr, the co-founder and guitarist of 1980s icons The Smiths, is turning to academia as a visiting professor of music. Marr, whose distinctive guitar style propelled hits by The Smiths including “How Soon Is Now,” “Panic” and “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,” has been appointed to teach undergraduates at Salford University. The school in Manchester, England, said that Marr would do workshops and master classes with students in its popular music and recording course.
*Eva Longoria says she has no plans to have children. At least not at the moment. “Not for me, and not for Gabrielle,” says Longoria, referring to her character on ABC’s “Desperate Housewives.” Longoria, 32, flashed her wedding ring and smiled, but gave few details about life with new husband Tony Parker as she walked the red carpet last week at Vogue magazine’s Fashion Mexico event in Mexico City.
*Members of Hollywood’s film and television writers union have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike any time after their contract expires at the end of the month. More than 5,000 members of the Writers Guild of America cast ballots, with 90 percent voting in favor of authorizing the strike, the union said Friday evening. Members voted Thursday.
