A number of streets in the Loop will be closed and 20 CTA bus routes will be rerouted Monday afternoon to make way for the opening ceremonies of the AIBA World Boxing Championships.
Nearly 700 boxers will walk in a procession at 4 p.m. along State Street from the Palmer House Hilton to the Chicago Theatre, where the opening ceremonies will be held.
State will be closed between Adams Street and Upper Wacker Drive from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monroe, Madison, Washington, Randolph and Lake Streets will be closed between Dearborn Street and Wabash Avenue from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
All CTA Red Line stops will be open during the procession. City officials encouraged commuters and people watching the procession to either take the “L” or time their driving to avoid the street closures.
The World Boxing Championships, one of the qualifying events for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, runs from Tuesday to Nov. 3 at the UIC Pavilion.
