Is “24” firing back at The New Yorker?

The Fox show appears to be answering its critics in a trailer for its upcoming seventh season, which is set to begin Jan. 13.

In a February article titled “Whatever It Takes,” The New Yorker examined the use — and some experts called it an overuse — of torture on “24.”

In the scenes from the two-minute trailer at www.24trailer.com, which went live Thursday, fictional counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer is seen responding resolutely to a government panel that is questioning his past actions, including the torture of terrorism suspects.

“Don’t expect me to regret the decisions that I have made, because sir, the truth is, I don’t,” Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) says.

Later, Bauer is caught up in a new terrorist plot and is about to question a suspect, when a female government official gives him the go-ahead to use extreme methods.

“Do whatever it takes. Torture him if you have to,” the woman says.

The new season of “24” will take place in Washington, D.C., and it will feature the return of a familiar face from past seasons of the show.

Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard), a counterterrorism agent who was thought to be dead, will return in Season 7. Don’t watch the trailer if you don’t want to know what Almeida is up to in the new season.
