With a diverse population, top-notch international cuisine, a thriving artist community and close proximity to the lake, Rogers Park offers plenty in the way of entertainment. But where do you head for live music, good eats and a cold drink after hours? We visited Chicago’s northernmost lakefront neighborhood to chat with resident Chris Cypher (a.k.a. Lord 360) at his favorite local hangout, Morseland.
Let’s talk about Rogers Park for a bit … what’s your take?
There isn’t a whole lot of nightlife, but the diversity and laid-back vibe have kept me here for about six years … oh, and the affordable rent helps too. There’s a good variety of authentic ethnic cuisine available.As far as Rogers Park goes, Morseland is definitely my choice for live music.
What draws you there?
The audience is reflective of Rogers Park, pretty diverse and laid-back, but many times during weekend showsit can getreal[ly] packed. I had my release party for “The Anomaly LP (The Battle Cry)” at Morseland, and the vibe was electric … people were packed wall to wall. They also have a good beer selection, and it’s a great spot in Rogers Park to catch a show or grab a drink.
What’s your musical style?
Hip-hop, and a few other sets of various dance music. I sing, rap … usually solo.
Your stage name is Lord 360. Where did that come from?
I always want to taste something new, learn something new, try a new skill, new challenge, whatever … so 360 is supposed to represent that full spectrum. Lord is meantto represent “mastery of.” So when I become Lord 360 with my music, I’m attempting to become the master of all angles … it can be interpretedas some grand undertaking or as me just tryingto spin my lack of focus into strength.
How often do you perform live?
Once or twice a month, but it varies. I don’t like to water down the stock, and I keep it fresh.
When you’re not working, where do you like to go out?
I’m not much of a club guy, but I like to go places with good music, preferablywith people dancing, or good beer. It must meet at least one of those two requirements, which is why I like Morseland. … I also like Smart Bar, Sonotheque, Darkroom, Betty’s Blue Star Lounge, Hopleaf …
