The recruiting connection that has helped turn around the Illinois football program has paid another dividend.

Reggie Ellis, a 6-foot-2-inch, 270-pound defensive tackle from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., has announced he will attend Illinois.

Ellis is recovering from a knee injury that isn’t expected to prevent him from playing as a freshman.

“He can’t wait to get to Champaign and be a difference-maker just like the rest of us and help our program from top to bottom,” said sophomore cornerback Vontae Davis, a Dunbar alum. “As long as coach [Ron] Zook is here, myself and Arrelious [Benn], a lot of D.C. guys will feel at home in Champaign.”

Freshman wide receiver/returner Benn and freshman defensive back Nate Bussey are also from Dunbar.

“He’s going to be something special,” Benn said of Ellis.
