Dear Tom,

I remember a year when it rained so hard on Halloween that trick-or-treating was cancelled. Our town postponed it for a day or two, but the make-up day was also washed out. What year was that?

Denise Perkins, Naperville

Dear Denise,

We checked with Chicago weather historian Frank Wachowski and concluded that the year in question was mostly likely 1994 or 1995. Halloween 1994 was just an awful day with 2.26″ of rain, strong winds and falling temperatures. Before midnight some of the west suburban areas even reported some snow. It also rained on three of the next four days, with only Nov. 2 remaining dry.

The following year, Halloween 1995 was also nasty, logging 0.20″ of rain on a chilly day with temperatures in the 40s. Even heavier rainfall occurred on Nov. 1 (0.63″), followed up by another 0.04″ on Nov. 3.
