The winners at Sunday Night’s American Music Awards seemed to conform to expectations, but host Jimmy Kimmel had to break with tradition.

After two weeks of writer-strike-imposed reruns of his late-night talk show, Kimmel returned to live TV, but there were no writers to provide him with jokes. “It may not look like it, but I’m striking right now in my heart,” he said, apologizing to the crowd for having to tolerate “made-up crap.”

But the show went on, and Chris Brown basically stole it with his performance of “Kiss Kiss,” featuring glow-in-the-dark choreography that ended with dancers hanging upside down and grooving on the ceiling.

Big winners included Daughtry and Justin Timberlake, and Kimmel even managed a laugh or two, at one point getting punched out by Kid Rock.
