Dear Tom,
Chicago received snow on Nov. 10, 1991 and Nov. 11, 1995. Was either one of these snows preceded by 70 (degrees) warmth and/or heavy thunderstorms?
Steve Hanan, Morton Grove, Ill.
Dear Steve,
The snow in 1991 was only a minor event for Chicago, totaling less than 0.5″, and temperatures the day before peaked no higher than the middle 40s.
The 1995 Veteran’s Day snow was a more significant event with the city officially receiving 1.9″ of snow, though most amounts across the metropolitan area were in the 2-4″ range with Peotone measuring 5″. That snow did follow a mild and stormy November 10 that brought thunderstorms and heavy rain to the area. High temperatures did not make it to 70 (degrees), but readings in the 50s were common. Rainfall was very heavy, with O’Hare officially reporting 2.37″, but Midway got substantially more logging 3.59″.
