You already know it has a dazzling art museum. And barrels of beer. And cheeseheads. But our love for Milwaukee runs deeper than the vats of suds in the Miller foam factory. There’s the Historic Third Ward, still evolving but which already rivals Bucktown in its breadth of boutiques, galleries and eateries. And then there’s the lakefront and RiverWalk, Brewers Hill and Brady Street, and sports teams galore. Oh, and did we mention the custard? Essentially, Milwaukee is a metropolitan Midwesterner’s paradise–and it’s practically in our backyard.

Alan Solomon’s 6 reasons to go

1. Milwaukee Art Museum
Grumble, if you wish, that the collection isn’t as good as the building–you’re right–but the building is spectacular, inside and out. The collection, by the way, is pretty darn good. Considering.
2. Festivals
When the weather’s good, there’s one just about every weekend–food and music and more food and more music–along with that Festival of Festivals, the 11-day Summerfest.
3. Miller Brewery Tour
Not only do you get free beer, you get to understand an industry that, despite defections, will always be part of this city’s heritage.
4. Performing arts
Not just oompah bands, but ballet, opera, the symphony, some jazz and a lively live theater scene. Personal fave: any musical production at the Skylight’s jewel box of a theater in the Historic Third Ward.
5. Milwaukee County Zoo
Everything a perfect zoo should be: It’s clean, it’s beautiful, it’s friendly, it’s easy to explore and, yes, it’s got all the essential critters.
6. Restaurants
You can still find a proper schnitzel or an elegant wurst, but over the last decade or so this has become a destination for people who actually know a cabernet from a zin.
