The 30-year-old Japanese outfielder agreed to a four-year, $48 million deal with the Cubs on Tuesday night. “He’s exactly what we needed for our ballclub moving forward,” General Manager Jim Hendry told the Tribune.

A career that began with a bang ended with a whimper for the 27-year-old one-time ace when the Cubs cut him loose Wednesday. Prior is coming off shoulder surgery and pitched in only nine games in 2006.
