Graphic makeup effects make this gruesomely effective, yet darkly humorous, 2003 thriller a questionable after-dinner attraction. Several college friends head for a remote cabin to take a break from their studies and contract a flesh-eating virus, the effects of which become apparent quickly. Stars include Jordan Ladd and Rider Strong (“Boy Meets World”).

There’s no science fiction in the story line of this 2006 romantic drama, but sci-fi fans might want to check it out for the two leads: “Stargate” franchise alumni Jaime Ray Newman (“Stargate: Atlantis”) and Michael Shanks (“Stargate: SG-1”). Newman plays a young widow whose love life is shaken up by a radio contest, thanks to her son and a friend (Burkely Duffield, Ingrid Torrance).
