Message board readers on chicagosports.com had mixed reactions to the Cubs’ proposed trade for Brian Roberts.
“Another bonehead move, to give up Marshall! Send Dempster (Dumpster) instead! …Also you should have given Prior another chance. Let’s hope it doesn’t come back to bite us like the Lou Brock debacle.” -LARRY SUAREZ
“I’d like to add a leadoff hitter like Roberts, but if we have to give up Marshall and Gallagher that’s way too much. Instead of going after Roberts, why not use the same talent to try and trade for another Oriole, Erik Bedard?
Adding a young lefty who was pretty dominant in the American League last year would help us more in the short term and the long term than adding Roberts.” -JOSH
“It’s never enough is it? We need a RF who hits from the left side, we need a leadoff hitter, we need Babe Ruth, blah blah blah! If the trade rumors are true, then it sounds like we didn’t give up much. I like this lineup…. Roberts, Fukudome, Lee, A-Ram, Soriano, Soto, Theriot, Pie, Pitcher.” -HERMAN FRANKS
“[To] blow up the back end of the rotation order to get a middle infielder to replace one (DeRosa) who played well seems like a very risky gamble. … But I see Roberts as a very marginal upgrade over DeRosa everywhere except in a fantasy baseball league.” -TOM
“I like the move to pick up Roberts, I like his speed and his knack to get on base. I don’t know about the starting pitching though, I think we need one FA pickup to be solid in case of a Marquis-Demp flop, but not Trash-chel.” -HYOEU
“Stupid, stupid, stupid-we have our team, and no former steroid user is going to improve us unless he keeps getting his steroids– a wasteful and dilapidated move sure to hurt our pitching.” -TIMOTHY FUGATE

SOX HITS
While Joe Crede remains property of the Sox, this marks the period where arbitration numbers will be exchanged. Crede’s case is unique because he played in only 47 games last season because of seasonending back surgery after coming off a career-best 2006 season. Fellow third basemen with somewhat similar service time (Morgan Ensberg and Hank Blalock) either struggled or coped with injuries. Crede earned $4.94 million last season.
– A holiday visit to the San Francisco Giants Dugout Store in Santa Clara, Calif., revealed no merchandise with Aaron Rowand’s name or number. Perhaps more revealing was that there was NO merchandise with Barry Bonds’ name or number attached.
