Don’t be rude!

QUESTION: How does rude behavior at the workplace — including browbeating from a boss — affect worker performance?

STUDY: Researchers from the University of Florida gave 275 students a series of brainstorming tasks to complete — but only after some students were harshly scolded about tardiness or going to the wrong room and others were told to imagine a scenario in which they were scolded. A control group completed the same tasks without being scolded beforehand.

FINDINGS: Verbal abuse so flusters people that they lose much of their problem-solving and creative talents. Even just imagining being on the receiving end of a tirade hampered workers’ abilities to perform routine tasks, be innovative and be good team players.
