The Cubs played in the first Hall of Fame Game in Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1940, and they will play in the final one, June 16 against the Padres. Because of increasingly difficult scheduling problems, Major League Baseball has announced that the midseason tradition will end after this game. The game starts at 1 p.m. Chicago time, with a parade starting two hours before.
Created by a mixture of passion, anger and frustration over a close defeat, the phrase “Commit to the Indian” wasn’t something Blackhawks coach Denis Savard planned on becoming the team’s official slogan. And it won’t be. Club President John McDonough said Tuesday the organization won’t use the phrase. McDonough said it didn’t catch the attention of special-interest groups enough to where they contacted him about using the Indian head in the team’s logo or the Hawks name itself.
