OK, so there’s hope.
Here in Chicago, mid-February, we take positive signs where we can get them.
Me, I’m looking south to Cuba. Fidel Castro, specifically.
Hang on, don’t turn the page. This isn’t a political column.
I’m just saying that if a leader can step down after, oh, I don’t know, 50 years when something isn’t working, I think it can happen here too.
Let’s all learn from this. Jerry Angelo, you took a Super Bowl team on your watch and turned it into a pile of mediocrity. You let good ones go, mediocre ones stay. Take a cue.
John Paxson. You’ve done a magnificent job of assembling the most average players in the game. Tremendous. Take a hint and a bow. Castro-style. See ya.
Kenny Williams. Congratulations. You’ve taken a World Series team and turned it into muck. And, you continue to shoot your mouth while doing so. Time to go.
Jim Hendry. It’s been 100 years. Someone pays — it’s you. Just leave the letter on my desk — it’s accepted.
Whoever it is who runs the Blackhawks. Oddly enough, that guy could maybe stay … no. Go. Just in case.
Good, I think that’s everyone — the heads of the five families if you will.
All right, this week, we also say goodbye to Muhsin Muhammad. Good guy. Can’t say I’ll miss him. Sorry folks — couldn’t see the value. Now watch. He’ll probably catch 20 touchdowns next year playing for … the Packers.
That’s it, I’m ready for spring. So is Jerry Owens, apparently. He says he wants to steal 65 bases.
Jerry, let’s start with some basics. I’d like you to get on base 65 times first … maybe play 65 games … perhaps get 65 at-bats.
Good number, 65. It’s also how many games the Sox should win this year.
Glad to see the Bears are combing the scouting combine. Let me give you a quick list of what we need: 1) new offensive line; 2) new receivers; 3) new running back; 4) new quarterback; and 5) new defensive line, linebackers, secondary and special teams.
That should do it.
By the way, America’s pastime is now America’s ripoff. I see it costs $300 to see a prime Cubs game. First off, I have no idea what a prime game is, but if anyone thinks the Cubs are worth $300 to watch, they’re either very rich, very stupid or very both.
Me, I’m neither. Thank God.
