NU provost clears dean
Northwestern University’s provost announced Friday that the dean of the Medill School of Journalism did not violate any policies in using unattributed quotes in alumni magazine columns last year. In a letter e-mailed to students, faculty and alumni, Provost Dan Linzer said he concurred with the findings of a three-person panel of experts that Dean John Lavine had accurately captured the essence of student sentiments about courses in his column.
Cops hunt robbers in Beverly
Chicago police issued an alert Friday for two men wanted in at least four armed robberies in Beverly on the Far Southwest Side last month. The incidents occurred from Feb. 14- 22 in an area bounded by 101st and 107th Streets and Throop Street and Damen Avenue, police said. In each case, the robbers approached a victim on the street, displayed a blue steel handgun and demanded cash and property, police said.
Boeing loses $40B bid
Northrop Grumman and the maker of Airbus planes won a multibillion-dollar Air Force contract to build 179 tankers used to refuel military aircraft mid-flight, a congressional staffer familiar with the award said Friday. It was a major blow to Chicago-based Boeing. Boeing has been supplying refueling tankers to the Air Force for nearly 50 years and had been expected to win the deal. The contract will be worth $30 billion to $40 billion over 10 to 15 years.
