SLAVERY: A mother and her adult daughter were found guilty Tuesday of keeping a Haitian teen as their slave for six years in their South Florida home. Evelyn Theodore, 74, and her daughter, Maude Paulin, 52, were convicted of conspiring to violate Simone Celestin’s 13th Amendment rights.
PORN ARRESTS: The FBI has arrested 12 Americans accused of participating in a global child pornography ring that distributed more than 400,000 lewd pictures and movies. The indictment unsealed last week in federal court in Pensacola, Fla., said some of the victims were as young as 5 years old. On Tuesday, FBI official J. Stephen Tidwell said police will be trying to track down the victims for years.
CRASH COSTS: Traffic crashes cost American motorists more than $160 billion a year, according to a AAA report to be released Wednesday. Residents of smaller cities faced a larger per-person burden, including an estimated $2,258 per person in the Little Rock-North Little Rock region. Researchers included factors such as property damage and lost earnings.
APOLOGY: The former chief of staff for ex-Gov. Frank Murkowski apologized to Alaskans on Tuesday for concealing more than $68,000 in Murkowski campaign expenses that were paid for by an oil field services company. Jim Clark pleaded guilty to fraud in an ongoing corruption probe.
NO MEN: Harvard University has banned men from one of its gyms for a few hours a week to accommodate Muslim women who say it offends their sense of modesty to exercise in front of the opposite sex. The trial policy went into effect Feb. 4.
NO STRINGS: The Town of Huntington, N.Y., voted 4-1 Tuesday to ban the sale of Silly String within 1,500 feet of a parade route. The resolution is aimed only at street vendors, not local merchants or those who use the product.
