MYANMAR VOTE: Myanmar’s military government has rejected a United Nations suggestion for independent observers to monitor the national referendum scheduled in May on a new constitution, state radio and TV reported Saturday. The rejection is the latest roadblock for UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari in his mission to promote democracy in Myanmar.

ARMENIA VOTE: Levon Ter-Petrosian, an opposition candidate, lost his court appeal of Armenia’s disputed presidential election, the outcome of which has led to deadly clashes between protesters and police. Election officials announced that Prime Minister Serge Sarkisian won the Feb. 19 election.

THATCHER BETTER: Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher returned home Saturday after spending the night in a London hospital for medical checks. The 82-year-old former Conservative leader had felt unwell during dinner with friends near the House of Lords in central London, according to her private secretary, Mark Worthington.
