Fermilab in Batavia is currently the world’s highest-energy physics laboratory. Appropriately, that’s where Daphyne Turner, 8, is flashing a very high-energy smile. “I had to move a ball to the other end at the right time,” the science-inclined 2nd-grader said. The display that delighted her showed how, by turning a crank to move the ball, a linear accelerator works. Daphyne’s mother, Tiffany, had heard about the open house for families but didn’t realize it was for older kids. After about an hour and a half, Daphyne became tired and asked to go home to Westmont. There was one last treat, though-the bison that roam part of the grounds. “They were big and calm and they looked nice,” Daphyne said.
