Ladies and gentlemen, the record industry has been put on notice.
Trent Reznor, of Nine Inch Nails, announced that his self-released instrumental effort “Ghosts I-VI” made $1.6 million in its first week of sales, according to Rolling Stone.
That’s his money, people; no record company middlemen involved.
But don’t go confusing his “Ghosts” with Radiohead’s “In Rainbows,” which also debuted digitally. Reznor talked about the differences between the two efforts during an interview by Australia’s ABC.
“What they did right: They surprised the world with a new record, and it was available digitally first,” Reznor said. “What they did wrong: By making it such a low-quality thing, not even including artwork … to me that feels insincere.”
