Gallons of oil that spilled into San Francisco Bay when the container ship Cosco Busan struck a fender protecting a support tower beneath the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on Nov. 7. Thousands of birds were killed and more than a dozen beaches were closed. On Monday the ship’s pilot, Capt. John Cota, was charged by federal prosecutors with criminal negligence and breaking environmental laws. He could get up to 18 months in jail and more than $100,000 in fines if convicted of the misdemeanor charges.
