Pitcher Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals agreed Thursday to a four-year, $15 million contract, a deal that includes two option years and could be worth up to $36 million.

“It’s something we’re very thrilled about,” general manager John Mozeliak said. “He embodies everything we look for in a player — his talent, his personality.”

The right-hander is the likely Opening Day starter, though the team has not made an announcement.

*Rays up-and-coming outfielder B.J. Upton left the game after he was hit on the left elbow by a pitch from Indians right-hander Paul Byrd. … Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan complained of soreness in his throwing arm and will be held out of games for at least a few days. … Dodgers third baseman Nomar Garciaparra likely will miss the season opener because of a broken bone in his right hand. … Right-handed pitcher John Patterson, who was the Nationals’ Opening Day starter last season, surprisingly was cut by the team.
