U. of C. ‘denounced’

A Chicago City Council committee voted Thursday to “denounce” the University of Chicago for its refusal to rid its financial portfolio of $1 million invested in companies doing business in Darfur. U. of C. spokeswoman Julie Peterson said the decision was the result of “very careful consideration.” Ald. Bill Ocasio (26th), chairman of the Human Relations Committee, said the resolution could be discussed at the next meeting.

Youths face earlier curfew

Chicago police and school officials are hoping parents will take heed of a new curfew beginning Saturday night. The new law requires that juveniles be home a half an hour earlier, at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 10 p.m. the rest of the week. Police released statistics that showed a 3 percent increase in crime since the new year.

Settlement totals $2M

The family of a slain restaurant worker has accepted a $2 million settlement in a wrongful-death lawsuit against Burger King and the franchisee of the restaurant where she was killed, records state. Mary Hutchison, 45, of Trevor, Wis., was stabbed and strangled, apparently during a robbery, on Nov. 27, 2006, in a Burger King restaurant in Lindenhurst. James Ealy, a former employee at the same location, has been charged in her murder.
