Telling number 100
No, not because that’s how many years it has been since the Cubs won the World Series. The more pertinent number is the years since they were in the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. That’s the realistic goal, and it has to be the first one for Lou Piniella’s team.
X-factor
Ben Sheets, Brewers
After a strong start to his career, health has become an annual issue for the Milwaukee ace. It’s hard to see how the Brewers can challenge for a playoff spot if Sheets doesn’t make 30 starts. The Brewers’ second-half dive in 2007 coincided with his trip to the disabled list. This is a contract year for Sheets, which means he’ll do everything in his control to stay on the mound.
In the wings
Jay Bruce, Reds
As a hitter, this guy has everything — except a spot in the big leagues. Bruce has the look of a .300 hitter with 30-homer, 100-RBI potential. Instead of force-fitting Bruce into center field, the Reds probably made the right decision for Bruce by sending him back to Triple A. His presence makes it unlikely that the Reds will re-sign free agent-in-waiting Adam Dunn. Look for Bruce to play 80-plus games in the majors this season, most likely after Dunn is traded for a young third baseman or pitching.
