With the Bulls’ playoff chances dwindling and the perception that he’s lost control of his players growing, interim coach Jim Boylan, under questioning, calmly stated his case to be retained beyond his guaranteed 13 remaining games.

“I think people are thinking I have no chance, and I don’t agree with that,” Boylan said Monday at the Berto Center.

He characterized as “very positive” his conversations with General Manager John Paxson.

“He has said it’s about how the team is developing, how the young guys are getting better,” Boylan said. “I would think a fair evaluation would be that someone has a chance to have a training camp and get these guys organized and have some authority. It’s not the easiest job in the world when you’re the interim coach and things start to go in the opposite direction and then reel guys back in.”

Boylan has an 18-25 record since taking over for Scott Skiles in December. Paxson has been supportive in his minimal public comments regarding Boylan, but the general manager is expected to interview other coaching candidates at season’s end. Most league observers don’t expect Boylan to be retained.
