Student accused of hate crime

A St. Charles high school student who scrawled a racial slur on the locker of his former girlfriend after their breakup has been charged with a hate crime, police said Monday. The ex-boyfriend is white and his former girlfriend is African-American. The 14-year-olds are freshmen at St. Charles East High School. The incident reportedly took place March 17. He is to appear Tuesday in Kane County Circuit Court.

Teen held in shooting of 12-year-old

A teenager charged with shooting a 12-year-old girl in a gang-related incident last week was held in lieu of $450,000 bail. Jaki Bell, 15, of the 9000 block of South Marquette Avenue was charged as an adult Friday with aggravated battery with a firearm. Fifth-grader Adamnesha Harris, who authorities said was not the intended target, was struck in the 8800 block of South Houston Avenue while talking to some boys she knew, prosecutors said.

Cop stripped of powers

A veteran Chicago police officer was stripped of his police powers after he was stopped last week by Kentucky State Police in the town of London, authorities said. A spokesman for the Kentucky State Police wouldn’t say why the officer was stopped.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is assisting in the investigation.

The officer is a 13-year veteran, a Chicago police spokeswoman said.

Officer punched in South Loop

After a group was kicked out of a South Loop restaurant early Monday morning, one man punched a Chicago police officer in the face, police said. Darren Patton, 21, was charged in connection with the incident, Officer John Mirabelli said. Patton was with at least four others when workers at White Palace Grill, 1159 S. Canal St., asked the group to leave at about 1 a.m., Mirabelli said.
