It’s Up to You

A Practice to Change Your Life by Changing Your Mind

By Karen Casey (Conari, $12.95 paper)

Author Karen Casey offers 12 weeks of morning and evening meditations based on a different principle each week. The goal is to change your life by changing your thinking.

1. Obsessing about a problem doesn’t solve it, it exaggerates it. “Resolution generally comes when we put our attention elsewhere, on helping others perhaps, and give our Higher Power time to nudge us in the direction we need to go.”

2. Choose which voice in your head to listen to. One is “loud, argumentative, easily threatened and quick to attack,” while the other is a peaceful voice of inner wisdom.

3. Passing judgment on others reveals who we are, not who they are. “Judgments prevent us from grasping the lesson in the moment.”

4. The urge to control others is strong and stems from our fear they’ll leave us –which is what they’ll do if we don’t step back and relinquish control.

5. Do no harm. “Anything short of kindness, love or helpfulness may not be intentionally harmful, but it still misses the mark.”
