Search for killer
Police in Elizabeth, N.J., searched Monday near railroad tracks for a suspect in the killing of Philadelphia Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, NJ Transit officials said. Police are seeking Eric Floyd on a murder charge in Liczbinski’s death.
Food inflation
Americans may be getting another helping of food inflation, and it’s likely to come from higher prices for chicken and pork. Overall food inflation could double this year, lifted by rising fuel, corn and soybean costs, some analysts predict.
Tobacco influence
A Massachusetts study suggests that restaurant smoking bans may play a role in persuading teens not to become smokers. Youths who lived in towns with strict bans were 40 percent less likely to become regular smokers than those in communities with no bans or weak ones.
Cats found
Police say they have discovered 300 dead cats stuffed into freezers at a man’s Sacramento home. Animal control officers also removed 30 live cats from 47-year-old Michael Louis Vondueren’s home over the weekend.
Discounted drugs
Arkansas-based Wal-Mart said Monday it would expand its discounted prescription drug program to offer 90-day supplies for $10 and add women’s medications at a discount. It also said it would lower the price of more than 1,000 over-the-counter drugs.
Bush troubled
President Bush said Monday that he’s troubled by rising gas prices and will take a look at proposals to relieve the crisis but warned there is no quick fix. Bush said the rising cost of gas “troubles me a lot” because it is “like a tax on the working people.”
