Ga. man executed
A Georgia man who killed his live-in girlfriend was executed Tuesday, the first inmate put to death since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the legality of lethal injections. William Earl Lynd, 53, was sentenced to die after killing Ginger Moore two decades ago.
Ice cream giant dies
Irvine Robbins, who helped build the 31-flavor craze at ice cream store Baskin-Robbins, has died at age 90. Robbins died Monday at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Daughter Marsha Veit says he had been ill for some time.
Free chicken
McDonald’s says it’s giving out millions of free samples of its two new chicken menu items. On May 15, the chain will give customers samples of its “Southern style” chicken biscuits and sandwiches when they buy a medium or large drink.
No pets on lap?
A California lawmaker wants to ban motorists from holding pets on their laps while driving, and getting caught can net a $35 fine. The bill passed the Assembly on a 44-11 vote Monday, and it now heads to the Senate.
Food subbed
Struggling with soaring food costs and cashed-strapped customers, restaurants are swapping expensive ingredients for cheaper fare. Pizza joints are trying new cheese products and seafood spots are replacing pricier entrees with humbler dishes such as catfish.
FBI raids office
The FBI has raided the Washington, D.C., office of U.S. Special Counsel Scott Bloch in an inquiry of whether he obstructed justice by having his computer files erased. Investigators say Bloch is suspected of hiring an outside company to scrub his computer.
TRENTON, N.J.: After two tell-all books, tawdry sex claims and 31/2 years of living apart, New Jersey’s gay ex-governor and his estranged wife showed up for court Tuesday morning to begin the process of ending their marriage. “It’s a beautiful day,” former Gov. Jim McGreevey said, but Dina Matos McGreevey had no comment.
