Impossible as it may seem, sometimes it’s necessary to head outside (OK, just outside) of the city limits for after-5 p.m. fun.
There are plenty of thriving Chicago suburbs; one of the more popular ones is Evanston, where in spite of its strict liquor license policy — you can’t be a bar in Evanston; there are only restaurants that serve liquor — new restaurant-bar-live-music venue hybrids are popping up in the downtown area.
This area is jumping with all types of fun — Tuesday night open-mic Irish folk music concerts and Friday night coffeehouse drum-circle performances — and much of it can be had when the two very different worlds of college students and permanent residents intersect. EVANSTON
This busy community has almost 75,000 people in about 8 square miles. It has approximate boundaries of Howard Street to the south, Isabella Street to the north, Lake Michigan to the east and McCormick Boulevard to the west. CTA options include the Purple Line, or buses 201 and 205.
