MINE HIT: The general manager and possibly other senior staff at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah, where nine miners died last August, hid information from federal officials that could have prevented the disaster and should face criminal charges, Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), chairman of a House investigation, said Thursday. The counsel for the mine’s owner, Murray Energy Corp., accused Miller of releasing “unfounded conclusions.”
MORE COPS PUNISHED: Seven more Philadelphia police officers were taken off street duty Thursday as investigators look into the videotaped police beating of three shooting suspects during a traffic stop. Thirteen of the estimated 15 officers on hand during the Monday incident are now off street duty.
INTERPOL ARREST: An actor who played Santa Claus was arrested on child sex charges Thursday in New Jersey after an international manhunt, just the second time Interpol sought the public’s help to find a suspected pedophile. Wayne Nelson Corliss, 58, is suspected of sexually abusing boys from Southeast Asia.
