MBEKI SNUBBED: Zimbabwe’s opposition declined to meet with visiting South African President Thabo Mbeki and said he should be replaced as mediator in the country’s political crisis. President Robert Mugabe and Mbeki met Friday on the South African leader’s third visit as a mediator.

ARRESTS IN SLAYINGS: Italian police arrested seven people in an investigation connected to a mob-style shooting in Germany last year that claimed the lives of six Italians dining at a restaurant, officials said. The suspects were not directly connected with the Aug. 15 shooting in Duisburg, said Francesco Iacono of the Italian police. But they belong to the feuding clans that were believed to be behind the shooting, he said.
