The Democratic party is trying to name a candidate for president. MTV is trying to name the best rapper.

Two different things, right?

Or are they?

MTV is polling fans to make its list of 2008’s “Hottest Rappers In the Game” (set to be revealed Friday night on MTV), but the network also polled rappers to get their picks. Could it be that picking the hottest rapper in the game is a lot like choosing a presidential candidate? Hey, this is a democracy. Read the quotes from the campaign trail and from mtv.com and decide for yourself.

DON’T OVERRATE YOURSELF

“I am extraordinarily honored that some of you will support me. And I understand that many more here in West Virginia will probably support Senator Clinton.” -Barack Obama

“I think Lil Wayne. Kanye. Lupe Fiasco had a good year. And … me at No. 5 again. I’m just that good.” -The Game

REFINE YOUR GIFT

“[Delivering great speeches is] harder to do than it looks. Obama has a narrative gift, but he always practices.” -Ronald Reagan (left) biographer Lou Cannon

“Lil Wayne is hot with his metaphors. His delivery is hot. All he has to do is stay at it.” -Keyshia Cole

NEVER GIVE UP

“I’m staying in this race until there’s a nominee.” -Hillary Clinton

“Definitely Common should be on the list because he goes hard. … To me, [Ludacris] is going to always be one of the dopest, because no matter what, Luda always stays around.” -Snoop Dogg

BUILD ON PAST SUCCESS

“Sometimes during this campaign I hear criticism of the 1990s. … But I always wonder what part of the 1990s they didn’t like: the peace or the prosperity?” -Hillary Clinton

“Jay-Z is going to always be in the top five — I just worked with him on Usher’s album. He’s still No. 1.” -Jermaine Dupri

STAY FEISTY

“If you want to be the man, you have to beat the man. Come November, it will be ‘Game over,’ and what are you going to do when John McCain and all his McCainiacs run wild on you?” -John McCain

“His boldness, being able to critique your moves … Rick Ross is a humble boss. That’s what we need, some spirit. Some of these cats don’t know where to go.” -Young Dro
