A Little Village grocery store was closed Wednesday after city inspectors found evidence of mice on the premises.
Inspectors found hundreds of mice droppings throughout Cinco Hermanas at 3900 W. 31st St., including in the storage area in the basement, said Matt Smith, spokesman for the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation.
They also found several snack food bags on the store shelves that had been gnawed into, he said.
“There’s so many families in the neighborhoods who rely on the area grocers for their basic staples and the management of those stores owes it to their customers to keep things clean and safe,” Smith said.
The store was cited for inadequate pest control and failure to protect food from contamination, he said.
Smith said the store will have to be cleaned, have structural repairs, and pass reinspection before it’s allowed to reopen.
